Robert Cornelius (1809 – 1893)
Robert Cornelius was an American photography pioneer and a successful lamp manufacturer from Philadelphia. His interest in chemistry and metallurgy led him to perfect the daguerreotype process. After taking his famous self-portrait, he opened two of the earliest photographic studios in the United States. Though his career as a photographer was brief, he eventually returned to his family's successful gas and lighting company, leaving a permanent mark on history as a true innovator.
